Kickstarter iPhone App: Easy crash on the Messages inbox screen

Date: 06/30/2013

Kickstarter iPhone App: Version 1.2.2

Description:

There is a very easy way to crash the Kickstarter iPhone app.  It is not likely that any regular user will encounter this problem, but it is interesting nonetheless.

There is a “Messages” option on the iPhone app’s Profile section.

In the “Inbox” screen, if you coordinate (it takes a little finesse) pressing the magnifying glass and the back arrow, you will often be left stranded on an “Inbox” screen.

While on this screen the, you will be left stranded with the keyboard on screen, and no search box.  If you press “search”, or even if you just wait for a second or two, the iPhone app will crash.

If you receive automatic crash dumps, the majority of the ones you are seeing today are from me doing this.

This is easier to show than to describe, so please see the attached screenshots.

Steps to reproduce:

1.     While signed into a Kickstarter account, launch the iPhone app (version 1.2.2)
2.     Select the “Profile” option
3.     Select “Messages”
4.     (takes a little practice) Press and hold the magnifying glass and the back arrow
5.     Release fingers from magnifying glass and back arrow
6.     Quickly tap the magnifying glass and the back arrow again

Result:  Easy way to crash the Kickstarter iPhone app (version 1.2.2) by pressing and holding two options on the Messages screen, then releasing and then tapping them again

Expected:  No crash

From the "Profile" area of the app, select "Messages".....

Press and hold the arrow and the magnifying glass.  Then release, and tap both once....

You'll land here, after about two seconds, the app crashes, 100 percent.

Kickstarter iPhone App: Make Twitter, Facebook and More share icons disappear!

Date: 06/30/2013

Kickstarter iPhone App: Version 1.2.2

Description:

There is an incredibly minor bug with the twitter and facebook share buttons on project detail pages.

Writing it down because I am bored.

You should download the Kickstarter iPhone App, it is really good.

I’ve noticed a small bug.  If you head to any project detail page, you will find three share buttons.  A “tweet” button, a facebook share button, and a “More” button.

If you coordinate pressing either the “tweet” or facebook share buttons while pressing the more button simultaneously, all three buttons will disappear if you cancel out of sharing either the facebook posting or tweet.

The buttons only disappear momentarily, and then you’re suddenly bumped back to the top of the screen.

An extremely minor bug, but one I found to be interesting.  Please see the attached screenshots.

Steps to reproduce:

1.     Launch the Kickstarter iPhone app (version 1.2.2)
2.     Sign in with your account
3.     Head to any project’s detail page
4.     Use two fingers and press the Twitter share icon the “more” icon at the same time
5.     Cancel out of the draft tweet
6.     Watch as the twitter, facebook and more icons disappear from the app
7.     Watch as your bumped to the top of the screen
8.     Scroll down and watch the icons return

Result:  On an project detail page, pressing either the “twitter” or facebook share icons while pressing the “More” icon at the same time results in the three icons momentarily disappearing from screen – and you’ll get bumped back to the top of the project

Expected:  Pressing either the twitter icon or the facebook share icons while also pressing the “more” icon shouldn’t result in buttons disappearing from within the Kickstarter iphone app

Impact:  LOOOOOOWWWWW

Coordinate pressing the Tweet share icon and the More icon at the same time....

Cancel out of the tweet....

The tweet, facebook share, and more icons momentarily disappear.

Amazon Cloud Player iPhone App: Null appears in an error message

Amazon Cloud Player iPhone App: The term “null” appears in an error message.

Date: 06/23/2013

iOS Cloud Player – Version 2.1.0.3018 remote_en_US

Description:

If you’re reading this, you’ll have to bear with me.   This bug is only about the appearance of a single term in one particular error message.  This has absolutely nothing to do with the convoluted steps it takes to actually activate this error message.

This bug is about an error message in the iOS Cloud Player app.  Specifically, it’s about the term “(null)” appearing in an error message in the app.

This is much easier to show than to describe, so please just scroll down to the attached screenshots if you are interested.

In the app, there is an option to create new playlists.  Using an admittedly whacky method, there is a 100 percent way to get “(null)” to appear in an error message related to deleting playlists.

The specific error message I see displays the message “Delete Playlist” and a sentence that reads, “Are you sure you want to delete the playlist “(null)”?”

The steps required are too bizarre to describe, and aren’t really all that important, anyways.  You can see screenshots below.

Steps to reproduce:

1.     Launch the Amazon Cloud Player iPhone App
2.     Sign in with your Amazon account
3.     Select “Playlists”
4.     Select “+ Create New Playlist”
5.     Create a new playlists with any name
6.     Select “Done”
7.     Select “Edit this playlist”
8.     Select “+ Add songs” and “X Delete” at the same time
9.     The Delete Playlist pop-up will appear overlaid on a screen
10. Select “Delete” then “Done”
11. Select the blank “Edit this playlist” button
12.  Select “Delete

Result:  There is a very easy and completely reproducible way to get the term “(null)” to appear inside of an error message in the Amazon Cloud Player iPhone App

Expected:  “(null)” should never appear in an iPhone app

Amazon Cloud Player iPhone App: Easy way to crash it.

iOS Cloud Player - Version: 2.1.0.3018 remote_en_US

Description:

I’ve found an easy way to crash the iOS Cloud Player iPhoneApp

This is the exact same type of crash I’ve found with many different iPhone Apps.

This is much easier to show than to describe, so please just take a look at the attached screenshots.

With the iOS Cloud Player app, there is a “Downloads” screen where albums that have been queued to be downloaded are displayed.  This screen has a “Cancel All” button in the upper right, and a back arrow in the upper left.

Using a little two finger physical dexterity, the user has the ability to drag the “Cancel All” pop-up on to the previous screen.  This happens if the user coordinates pressing “Cancel All” and the back arrow at the same time.

Steps:

1.     Launch the Amazon Cloud Player iPhone App
2.     Sign in with your Amazon account
3.     Select some music out of the cloud
4.     Add some of your music to the download queue
5.     Head to “Settings” and then “Manage downloads”
6.     From the “Downloads” screen coordinate pressing “Cancel All” and the back arrow at the same time
7.     The “Cancel All” pop-up will be displayed incorrectly on the “Settings” screen – select “Yes” from the pop-up

Result:  There is a very easy way to crash the iOS Cloud Player app via the active downloads screen

Expected:  Shouldn’t crash, even using such a bizarre method

Note:  I’ll use the customer feedback feature I spotted, which I am guessing will give you the crash dumps.

Queue up a download on the iOS Cloud Player app.....

Head to the "Manage downloads" area of the app....

Takes a little two finger dexterity, but select the "Cancel All" and back arrow options at the same time...

You'll be left here, on the "Settings" screen with the "Cancel All" pop-up on screen.  Selecting "Yes" crashes the app.
