Quip iPhone App: Easy to get menu to disappear

Date: 08/30/2013

Quip iPhone app: Version 1.2

Description:

I’ve found a weird bug with the Quip iPhone app.  This isn’t the type of bug that any sane user will ever run into, but it is odd, and I’ve managed to get it a couple times.

It’s bad, because it easy to make the top menu disappear, and if done in one particular way, it strands the user on a blank gray screen with no menu items at all.  At one point I was even forced to delete the app and re-download in order to get the menu to appear again.

This bug is extremely difficult to describe, so please see the attached screenshots.

I’ll try to describe.  After exiting a document, you’re presented with a gray page which shows the history of it.  In the upper right hand corner of this screen, there is an icon of two heads.  The two heads activate a “Sharing” pop-up.

If you activate this “Sharing” popup while returning to the Desktop, you’ll be able to edit and delete the sharing options.  There are occasions when the folder is sharable.  If you select “Delete” for the sharing of the folder – the top menu UI will disappear once you dismiss the “Sharing” popup.

Like I said, it’s a mouthful.  I’ve been able to find a way, to completely strand the user with no UI at all.  Exiting and re-launching the app doesn’t work.

I’ll try to approximate some repro steps, but it’s easier shown than described.

Steps:

1.     Launch the Quip iPhone app with active account
2.     Head to the Desktop and select a folder with documents that’s been shared with someone
3.     Enter a document and exit out
4.     From a documents history screen, select the two head icon and the reverse button in upper right at the same time
5.     From the misplace “Sharing” pop-up, delete folder and dismiss pop-up
6.     Note no UI in the app

Result:  There’s an easy way to get UI to disappear in the app – if you delete the folder from sharing pop-up after activating it by backing out of a document’s history page

Expected:  No disappearing UI (even if it’s from bizarre user use!)

Select a folder that has documents in it, and that has been shared with someone....

Select a document....

Back out of the document...

Here's where the weirdness begins.  Select the two heads as you back out of the screen...

The Sharing pop-up will rise up on the screen with the documents.  Attempt to Edit from this pop-up.

Delete it!

Delete it!

Dismiss the "Sharing" pop-up...

Top UI has disappeared.

Changing orientation of the screen doesn't bring back the UI.

For additional fun, select a solitary document in a folder.

If you follow the same steps as above, you'll be left stranded on a gray screen with no UI to return you to desktop at all!
