Quip iPhone App: Easy to get menu to disappear

Date: 08/30/2013

Quip iPhone app: Version 1.2

Description:

I’ve found a weird bug with the Quip iPhone app.  This isn’t the type of bug that any sane user will ever run into, but it is odd, and I’ve managed to get it a couple times.

It’s bad, because it easy to make the top menu disappear, and if done in one particular way, it strands the user on a blank gray screen with no menu items at all.  At one point I was even forced to delete the app and re-download in order to get the menu to appear again.

This bug is extremely difficult to describe, so please see the attached screenshots.

I’ll try to describe.  After exiting a document, you’re presented with a gray page which shows the history of it.  In the upper right hand corner of this screen, there is an icon of two heads.  The two heads activate a “Sharing” pop-up.

If you activate this “Sharing” popup while returning to the Desktop, you’ll be able to edit and delete the sharing options.  There are occasions when the folder is sharable.  If you select “Delete” for the sharing of the folder – the top menu UI will disappear once you dismiss the “Sharing” popup.

Like I said, it’s a mouthful.  I’ve been able to find a way, to completely strand the user with no UI at all.  Exiting and re-launching the app doesn’t work.

I’ll try to approximate some repro steps, but it’s easier shown than described.

Steps:

1.     Launch the Quip iPhone app with active account
2.     Head to the Desktop and select a folder with documents that’s been shared with someone
3.     Enter a document and exit out
4.     From a documents history screen, select the two head icon and the reverse button in upper right at the same time
5.     From the misplace “Sharing” pop-up, delete folder and dismiss pop-up
6.     Note no UI in the app

Result:  There’s an easy way to get UI to disappear in the app – if you delete the folder from sharing pop-up after activating it by backing out of a document’s history page

Expected:  No disappearing UI (even if it’s from bizarre user use!)

Select a folder that has documents in it, and that has been shared with someone....

Select a document....

Back out of the document...

Here's where the weirdness begins.  Select the two heads as you back out of the screen...

The Sharing pop-up will rise up on the screen with the documents.  Attempt to Edit from this pop-up.

Delete it!

Delete it!

Dismiss the "Sharing" pop-up...

Top UI has disappeared.

Changing orientation of the screen doesn't bring back the UI.

For additional fun, select a solitary document in a folder.

If you follow the same steps as above, you'll be left stranded on a gray screen with no UI to return you to desktop at all!

Yonder iPhone App: Very easy to get keyboard UI stuck over “Share by” option

Date: 08/30/2013

Yonder iPhone App: Version 1.6

Description:

I downloaded the Yonder app yesterday and gave it a try.

I’m a big fan of anything location based on the iPhone, and I liked Yonder a lot.

There was a minor bug that continually upset me – maybe I’m the only one to encounter this bug, but I figured that I might as well write it down.

This bug is much easier to show than to describe, so please take a look at the attached screenshots below.

Here’s the basic of the bug, summed up in a single sentence: During the course of normal use, I continually got stranded on a screen where the keyboard UI was overlaid on top of a “Share by” pop-up.

This actually happened to me during regular use.  To be completely honest, I am using my iPhone using wi-fi of medium strength.  Still, this is the first time I’ve seen something similar to this.

Steps to reproduce:

1.     Launch the Yonder iPhone app (version 1.6)
2.     From the “Popular” feed of photos, navigate to any photo
3.     Select the arrow to activate the “Share by” pop-up
4.     From the “Share by” pop-up select “Twitter”
5.     Wait for the “Share by” pop-up to descend
6.     Select the arrow to activate the “Share by” pop-up a second time
7.     Let the “Share by” pop-up remain on screen
8.     Wait two seconds

Result:  There’s a very easy way to get stuck on a screen with a keyboard UI over a “Share by” pop-up in the Yonder iPhone App

Expected:  I don’t expect to get stuck with a keyboard UI placed over the “Share by” pop-up

Pardon the slightly misplaced oval.  Select the arrow to activate the "Share by" pop-up.

Select the "Twitter" option.  After you press "Twitter" once, the pop-up will drop out of sight...

You'll wait a long time, and you won't see the twitter pop-up.  Press the arrow one more time, and wait...

Leave the "Share by" pop-up on screen for one moment....

You'll end up stuck on this screen.  It's not obvious, but pressing the facebook button will take you out. There's no way (that I could figure out) to dismiss the keyboard.  I ran into this during actual use.

Fleep iPhone App: Crash on the "Support Message" screen

Date: 08/30/2013

Fleep iPhone App: Version 1.0

Description:

I was playing around last night with the Fleep iPhoneApp.  If you haven’t downloaded it yet, you should.  It’s interesting.

I did find one minor bug with the Fleep app – a very easy to reproduce crash.

This crash isn’t the type of crash that a normal user will encounter.  Still, it happens, so I’ve decided to write it down.

This crash is similar to a number of other crashes that I’ve discovered with other apps.

This crash is much easier to show than to describe, so if you’re interested, please just scroll down to the single attached screenshot.

When you launch the app, you’re provided with a default “Fleep Support” message.  From this “Fleep Support” message, the user is presented with two options in the upper left and upper right corners of the screen.

One of these options is a “pinned messages” icon in the upper right.  The other is a back option in the upper left.  If the user presses and releases these two options at the exact same time, the app will crash 100 percent.

Steps to reproduce:

1.     Download the Fleep iPhone app and create an account by confirming the sent email
2.     Sign into your account
3.     Select the default “Fleep Support” message
4.     From the “Fleep Support” message screen, press and hold the pinned message and back icons
5.     Release the held down pinned message and back icons at the exact same moment

Result:  There is an easy to reproduce crash with the Fleep iPhone App (version 1.0) on the “Support Message” screen – the app will crash if you press and hold the pinned message and back icons at the same time, and then release at the same time

Expected:  No crash on the “Support Message” screen

Repro Rate (takes practice) 7/7

Foursquare iPhone App: Easy way to crash the app using “Open in Safari” from in-app facebook and twitter screens

Date: 08/20/2013

Foursquare iPhone App: Version 6.2.4

Description:

Yet another bug that no regular person would hit.

When you search for people’s profiles inside of the iPhone app, you’re given the ability to open up their linked facebook and twitter accounts.

If you time it right, you can drag the “Open in Safari” option onto the incorrect screen.

If you select this “Open in Safari” option on the wrong screen, the iPhone app will crash.

This is exactly like the last bug I just wrote.  This is easier to show than to describe, so please take a look at the attached screenshots.

Steps to reproduce:

1.     While signed into an account, launch the Foursquare iPhone app (version 6.2.4)
2.     Select the left hand slider – then select “Find Friends”
3.     Select “Search by Name”
4.     Enter in a search term (for example: “test”)
5.     Select a profile with linked facebook and/or twitter account (example: “Syracuse University”)
6.     Select the Facebook or Twitter options
7.     Coordinate pressing the arrows in the upper right hand corner and the bottom left hand corner simultaneously
8.     You’ll be taken to the previous profile screen with an “Open in Safari” option at the bottom of the screen – select it

Result: On the in-app facebook and twitter screens, the user is able to select two options and drag the “Open in Safari” screen onto the previous screen, doing so crashes the iPhone app

Expected:  App shouldn’t crash if “Open in Safari” is dragged to a previous screen

Select a foursquare page or profile that has linked facebook or twitter accounts.

On a profile or page that has linked facebook or twitter accounts, select the option to visit them...

Select the "Facebook" option...

Select the arrows in opposite corners of the screen - doesn't matter when you do it, you can wait till the facebook connect page loads, or you can do it fast, as seen above...

The "Open in Safari" option is on the incorrect screen, selecting either "Cancel" or "Open in Safari" will crash the iPhone app...
